The Work Place
Until the First World War Purley was essentially an agricultural community with a sprinkling of large houses for people with private means. Between the wars things began to change with increasing options for travelling to one’s place of work and a number of businesses setting up in Purley to provide some quite different employment.
After the Second World War there was an explosion in the number of houses and an almost complete disappearance of opportunities for employment in the village, although a very high proportion of the population now run some sort of business from home.
